Basilica of St. Mary Gallery

I've added a new gallery to the web site. This gallery consists of a number of black and white images of the Basilica of St. Mary in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

St. Mary's was the vision of Archbishop John Ireland (1838-1918) and French architect Emmanuel Masqueray. Construction started on the Basilica on August 7, 1907. The first mass was celebrated on May 31, 1914 when the exterior work was finished. Interior work began in 1922 and was nearly completed when the church was named America's first basilica by Pope Pius XI in 1926.

The architecture of the basilica is Modern Renaissance. This architecture is based on classical Roman architecture. This makes it a wonderful place to photograph. One Saturday when I was photographing when some people entered the basilica and one person started singing. The building filled with a very nice vocal.
